At 15:00 on November 1, as the slings of the XCMG XGC28000 crawler crane were gradually put down, the first segment of the steal tower of the main span, known as “The Gate of Forces”, of Yongding River Grand Bridge in the westward extension project of Chang’an Avenue, Beijing, was hoisted. When the 574-ton segment of the steel tower accurately penetrated into the 85 steel tie rods and 208 shear keys embedded in the concrete and firmly stood on the base, the construction of the Yongding River Bridge project started in June 6, 2016, officially entered the sprint stage of installing the upper steel structure of the bridge. It also meant that XGC28000 created another record in history.

The main span is located in the Lianshi Lake scenic area in Yongding River, Shijingshan District, Beijing. It is a 639m-long inverted U-shaped double-inclined cable-stayed bridge of full steel structure, with a main span length of 280m, inclined steel tower high 124.93m, and the largest width of 54.9m. It is the largest span bridge in Beijing and the widest cable-stayed bridge in China. XGC28000 plays an important part in its construction.
This structure is simple, beautiful and in line with the environment to cleverly solve the bridge layout at oblique crossing of road and river. It is the first application of its kind at home and abroad. “There is a huge span in Yongding River, and the bridge is a skewed bridge. We need to address problems like bridge force and flow resistance. This is a daunting task,” said Mr. Yang, who is responsible for the construction design from the General Municipal Engineering Design and Research Institute Co., Ltd.
Large scale, complex structure, intricate nodes, high precision requirements ... ... Previously, the project has gone through river-way cofferdam, bored pile foundation, and pier and abutment construction processes. The 2,000t XGC28000 was used to hoist the tower-girder section of the tower part of the main span. XGC28000 defeat another foreign brand by 5% load lower (85%). “Our technical team has been stationed in Beijing for two years. We worked with experts from Beijing Urban Construction Group to develop the most professional and feasible hoisting plan for the project employer,” explained Mr. Yu Limin, chairman of Shandong Haiwan Hoisting Engineering Co., Ltd., the equipment operator of this project. “Each section has a different operating condition, and we must be clear about the loading angle and bearing force of each rope accurately,” he emphasized.
